Advancing The Sustainable Development Goals For Women And Youth Development Workshop
A workshop on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for promoting the social development of women and youth in Edo State was held on June 15, 2017 at the WHARC’s Secretariat Hall. The workshop was organized by WHARC as part of the project activities for the project funded by Ford Foundation. The objectives of the workshop include: To build awareness and commitment of stakeholders towards promoting the social development of women and youth in Edo State. To strengthen critical stakeholders’ knowledge and skills needed to develop appropriate policies and programming for addressing the development of youth and women in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Edo State. Participants present at the SDGs workshop organized by WHARC include: A representative of the Deputy Governor of Edo State (Philip Shaibu) Hon. (Barr.) Kingsley O. Ehigiamusor, A representative of the first lady of Edo State (Mrs. Betty Okonoboh, wife of the speaker of Edo State House of Assembly), Prof. Paul Nwulu from Ford Foundation, Wives of some honorables from the Edo State House of Assembly, Representatives from the different government parastatals and ministries, civil society organizations, Professors from the University of Benin, Students from the University of Benin, the media, WHARC staffs. The essence of having this spectrum of participants is because the (17) seventeen goals are all encompassing, that is, it cuts across all sphere of influence, discipline and all issues of life. Series of presentation were made in these areas: The SDGs: A broad overview presented by Prof. F.E Okonofua, the Implications of the SDGs for Youth and Women Development presented by Professor F.E. Okonofua, the Human Rights and Gender Dimension of the SDGs presented by Professor (Mrs.) Agatha Eguavoen, Policies and Laws for promoting SDGs in Edo State: A review by SDGs Focal person in Edo State (Represented by Mr. M. Okunsebor – PRO Project Support Unit SDGs. In a nutshell, the lectures and presentations at the workshop were geared towards strengthening the skills and knowledge of participants/critical stakeholders on developing a consensus for sustained implementation of the SDGs in Edo State. As this will serve as a model and blueprint for policymakers and stakeholders towards making sustained policies which will translate to social development of women, youth and children in the long run. The highpoint of the workshop was when participants were divided into small groups to deliberate on areas of the SDGs that are related to women, youth and children development.
